Teachers must be college graduates and have experience in Chinese language instruction. Teachers are recruited through public advertisements and selected following interviews. Some teachers were Tunghai University students who underwent training in Chinese language instruction during their undergraduate education at Tunghai. Facilities: Fourteen small classrooms, four large classrooms. A library for teacher use has 500 volumes. There are also six sets of audio-visual equipment. Auditing of Tunghai University courses is permitted, but only students from the language center's exchange program with the University of Massachusetts may take university courses for credit. In principle, general university library privileges are for exchange students only. Others may have library privileges through special arrangement. Students: In the first term of 1991, there were 34 students from the United States, 9 from Germany, 6 from Japan, 1 from Switzerland, 7 from Korea, 1 from Canada, and 1 from Indonesia, There is an even female/male ratio. Admissions: There is no Chinese language prerequisite. Applicants must be in good academic standing at an institution of higher education. They must submit a letter of intent, two application forms, a medical report, an academic transcript, and two letters of recommendation. Calendar: The Language Center's academic calendar is the same as that for the regular Tunghai University programs: two semesters, the first beginning in September and continuing through late January, the second beginning in February and continuing through mid June. Tuition: Students are charged on a semester basis. Individual tutorial classes cost NT$5,200 per semester hour. Living Expenses: Those living off campus should be prepared to pay about NT$15-20,000 per six months for rent. Altogether, living expenses will run to about NT$7,000 per month. Curriculum and Instruction: Levels of instruction are divided into elementary, intermediate, and advanced, with courses in conversation, reading, newspapers, and Classical Chinese. Classes have one to five students. Students register for ten hours of class per week. Extracurricular Activities: The Language Center arranges trips and other excursions. Scholarships: Students on the exchange program from the University of Massachusetts may apply to the ROC Ministry of Education for Regular Scholarships. Housing: Dormitory housing is available for exchange students only. Other students must live off campus. Transcripts or Certificates Awarded: None. Transfer Credit: Non-exchange students must make their own arrangements.
