Most teachers have at least a BA; others might be selected for ability to teach in specific fields. Generally, it is hoped candidates for teaching positions have had prior experience in language teaching. Candidates take a test prior to being hired. The student/teacher ratio is 5:1. Facilities: Five large classrooms, 27 small classrooms, one language room, one student lounge, library, study hall, studio arts classroom, some computer facilities. Students are permitted to audit Fu Jen University classes and use the Fu Jen University library. Students: Distribution by national origin: In 1992, the Language Center had 86 students from Europe (including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Britain, Switzerland, and Poland), 105 students from Asia(including Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and India), 52 students from the Americas(mostly the United States), and also students from Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. There were 144 men and 101 women. Admissions: Students must be 18 years of age or older and graduated from high school with grades of at least "B." Students must submit completed application form, official transcript, letters of recommendation, guarantee of financial support, and health certification. Applications must be received six months prior to the term for which the student wishes to register. Calendar: The academic year is divided into five terms of two months each, plus two summer terms of one month each. Dates for each term and application deadlines are as follows. Living Expenses: Those living on campus should prepare about NT$7-8,000 per month. Those living off campus will need about NT$9-10,000 per month. Curriculum and Instruction: In addition to Chinese language instruction at all levels, courses include Taiwanese, calligraphy, black ink painting, Chinese art history, and a series of courses taught in English about Chinese history, philosophy, and art. Language courses are taught entirely in Chinese. Students may register for individual, two-student, three-student, or four-student classes. Extracurricular Activities: The Center organizes an annual Christmas party as well as other activities. Scholarships: The Center offers no scholarships or financial aid to its students. However, after successfully completing three months of full time study, students are eligible to apply for scholarships offered by the ROC Ministry of Education. Please see Appendix II for further information. Housing: There are very limited dormitory spaces for men, and about twenty spaces for women. Transcripts or Certificates Awarded: Grade reports and attendance certificates are given. Transfer Credit: Students must make their own arrangements with their home institutions. Exchange Agreements with Foreign Institutions: The Institute of Asian Studies, USA, sponsors a study abroad program at the Language Center. Insurance: Students of the Language Center are eligible to enter a comprehensive health insurance program offered by the China Life Insurance Company. Cost for a six month period is US$85.
