Living Expenses:NT$9,000 per month Scholarships:MOE Teaching Staff: Approximately 100 full-time and part-time instructors. Most teachers are Cheng Kung University students undergoing training in Chinese language teaching. All are native Mandarin speakers with training in Chinese language, literature, history, and philosophy. Instructors for beginning Chinese classes are also able to speak English. Candidates are given written and oral examinations, plus training. The student/teacher ratio is 1.2:1. Facilities: The Language Center's facilities include a language laboratory and reading room. Students are allowed to use the Cheng Kung University general library and audit classes. Language Center students are issued a university library card. The therefore have access to the university's Chinese literature and history collection. Students: Distribution by national origin: Students come from Korea, Thailand, Japan, the Philippines, the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Holland, Australia, and other countries. The ratio of male students to female students is 1.4:1. Admissions: Admissions requirements: The Language Center does not require any previous study of the Chinese language. Application requirements/procedures: Three copies of the application form, study plan, transcript, photocopy of diploma, two letters of recommendation, health certification, photocopy of passport and financial statement. Curriculum and Instruction: Students register for ten hours of courses per week. They may register for either individual or two-student classes(tuition varies according to class size). The language center's program aims to teach both Chinese language and culture. Language courses are divided into elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Other special elective courses include calligraphy, art philosophy, and literature. Extracurricular Activities: The Language Center sponsors may extracurricular activities, including Chinese festival excursions, museum visits, film showings, Mandarin speech contest, and end-of-term party. Scholarships: Grants are awarded to students who have been enrolled for over three months. To apply, they must submit a copy of their grades and study plan, as well as two letters of recommendation from their language instructors. Housing: Not available. Transcripts or Certificates Awarded: The Language Center provides certification of successful completion of course work¡C Transfer Credit: Students should make their own arrangements with their home institutions. Exchange Agreements with Foreign Institutions: University-level exchange agreements can be made. At present, there is an exchange agreement with San Diego State University.
